A Machine Aesthetic

A new exhibition opening in Project Space Plus, the inspiring new gallery space at the University of Lincoln's £11 million Art and Design Building, bringing together a diverse range of contemporary artists who either use or are influenced by ideas of mechanisation.

From the first daubings of pre-historic caves, through the invention of the camera obscura and ready-made oil paint in tubes, to the use of digital media, artists have been among the first to embrace and exploit new technologies.

Since the late 1950s/early 60s artists have involved the manufacture of machines to produce their artistic 'products'. Where Jean Tinguely led the way, artists as diverse as Rebecca Horn, Chris Burden, Roxy Paine, Damien Hirst and the artists in this exhibition have followed.

Lincoln Inspired | 7th - 12th May 2013

Lincoln Inspired | arts, music, books, theatre, comedy and conversation come together in an exciting new festival for the city of Lincoln.

Back on March 21, 2012, the first seeds of what was to become Lincoln Inspired were sown. A group of people enthusiastic about Lincoln's arts scene, who had worked together for many years, gathered in a pub beside the Brayford to talk about making the dream of a new festival for the city come true.

At the end of a long evening Lincoln Inspired had been born. We wanted a wide-ranging event, showcasing the best in books, comedy, conversation, music and performance. We wanted to support artists, encourage and develop new talent and offer opportunities for everyone from babies upwards to take part, hear, write and enjoy, laugh and learn along with us.

Since then, we have all been on a journey, personally and professionally. We wanted Lincoln Inspired to belong to the city, so we went looking for partners, from individuals who could pledge a few pounds to companies and venues that could offer more. We had to be inspired so we could inspire others.

Now here we are, so pleased and excited to be welcoming you to the first Lincoln Inspired festival. Every day we are still amazed and overwhelmed by the positive responses from venues, partners, artists, patrons and our funders - you.
